Choice project: abc video
Artist Statement: For our choice project, Brie and I chose to create an ABC's video using students names from Cleveland. It was kind of a cool idea of Brie's originally that uses something everyone knows, but is different because it is people names instead of the just the letters. Because our classmates probably know at least a couple of the people used in the video, it makes it more personal to our class than just letters.
5x5 project: Playing guitar
culminating choice project: responding to commercial media
Artist Statement
For this project, we decided to investigate the inner workings of culinary advertising. As viewers we take the simple presentation of food in advertisements as accurate representations of what the actual products look like. We recreated actual food products and some of the tricks and replacements used in media. Even using the dupes that are used in professional advertisements, we still faced lots of trouble presenting them as well as they look in photos and videos in the media. This reiterates the fact that everything in media we are shown is constructed. The advertisements we see that are presented as 10 or 15 seconds, had hours of preparation and tweaking behind the scenes. Through this we learned how difficult it is to present a food that is as picture perfect as we see in the media, and appreciation for the hours of work gone into the advertisements presented, as well as expanded knowledge and skills for dissecting the lies in ads.
